Becoming a qualitative inquirer requires courage, especially in today’s metrified, neoliberal, businessified academy. We are admired for thinking differently but are also often met with concern and trepidation. We are celebrated for trailblazing a scholarly path for ourselves but also persistently frowned upon for going against the grain. More concerningly, while many academicians advocate for the need for more qualitative research, interested novices may struggle to locate where to start. As Higgs and McAllister (2001) once wrote, “Novice researchers often get lost in the literature on interpretive [qualitative] research. Kai-Sean Lee is an assistant professor who previously pursued a career in pastry, culinary, and speciality coffee. His research interests lie in the intersection among philosophical aesthetics and gastronomy. Known as a qualitative methodologist, Kai-Sean specializes in autoethnography, narrative inquiries, and non-positivist research designs. He is also an adamant advocate for "slow scholarship" which calls for a more decelerated and immersive orientation to research, thinking, and learning.
